THE MONTESAS

The Montesas hail from Germany and play raw and puristic "Star-Club-style" beat. Influenced by the wild rock´n´roll bands that performed the St. Pauli circuit in Hamburg's nightlife during the early 60´s with their homegrown authentic style, the band pride themselves on playing raw and extremely danceable R´n´B, without just copying their ancestors.

RSG! caught up with singer Marcel Bontempi to find out more about the Montesas. "The bands name 'Montesas' comes from a Catalan motorcycle factory called 'Montesa'" explains Marcel, "when I was young, I lived a short while in Barcelona, and they all were cruising with this strange, but cool-looking motorcycle"

"You don't anticipate absolutely nothing with it...if you don't come from Barcelona...but the people there really love us! We played the first time there at the WipeOut weekend in Calella, and the press compared it to the arrival of the Beatles in the States. (this is of course exaggerated, but shows how much the people there liked us)".

"We all had a strictly retro background and already different experiences in music when we decided to found the ultimate band. the drummer boy (terry inferno) and me were into authentic rockabilly and hillbilly music, Hannes "bugaloo bix" Kühler (the organ player) was into Rocksteady, authentic ska and crazy 60s jazz. Oliver Twist the bass guitarist digs Mod, freakbeat, 60s punk and a little psych. and we all of course love late 50s rock'n'roll and early 60s beat, RnB & soul".

You only have to check out the pictures of the band on their cool website to see these guys have certainly got the image right and listen to the sound samples to get a flavour of their stompin' retro sound. Check out The Montesas rockin' website @ www.montesas.de
